What Happened to Solar Innovation? Reflections on the Cultural Analysis of Technology Policy

Around 2007, Silicon Valley venture capitalists decided there was money to be made in the climate crisis and announced the birth of a new cleantech industry. Ten years later, large-scale cleantech manufacturing has left the United States. What happened in between? Focusing on solar energy, reporting on related analysis, and showing interview clips from an accompanying film, Professor Newfield suggests that conceptual blockages kept leading figures from rethinking a U.S. innovation model that no longer supports the development of technology with large public benefits.
