Despite the storming of the Capitol on January 6 the culmination of Donald Trump’s two-month-long “self-coup” attempt the former president remains an immensely popular figure within the Republican Party polls indicate that Trump would be the odds on favorite to win his party’s presidential nomination in 2024 But the anti-democratic tendencies within the Republican camp extend beyond Trump’s behavior while in office Since the start of this year, Republican state parties have introduced an almost record number of measures to curtail the voting rights of minorities in particular. In his lecture,
Dr. Adorf assesses the likely path the Republican Party will chart over the coming years and the growing threat it presents to the democratic foundations of the United States.

Philipp Adorf is a research assistant at the University of Bonn’s Institute of Political Science and Sociology and the author
of Die Republikaner in den USA (2019). His research has focused on the Republican capture of the American South and its
impact on the party’s chances of obtaining electoral majorities, as well as on the increasing popularity of right-wing populist actors on both sides of the Atlantic. His upcoming book "Zerreißprobe für die Demokratie?" (co-authored with Patrick Horst) provides an in-depth look at the 2020 election and the state of US democracy.
