In about two weeks, on November 8th, US Americans go to the polls in the Midterm Congressional Elections. In this election, all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate are contested.
While Democrats hope to retain a majority in the Senate, Republicans have a good chance of taking control of the House of Representatives. Historically, the party in power loses House seats during the first term of a new president. This would restrain President Biden’s remaining policy agenda. With the electorate sharply divided on issues such as the increasing inflation, recent restrictions on abortion, gun violence, and the US reaction to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the political situation shortly before the election could hardly be more complicated.
