Dear Members and Friends of the AmerikaHaus NRW e.V.,

We cordially invite you to the lecture:

"The Transnational Imaginary in Katie Kitamura's Intimacies

with

Prof. Dr. Susanne Rohr | Universität Hamburg

Tuesday, July 4 at 6 p.m., Room B, IAAK, Regina-Pacis-Weg 5, 53113 Bonn

What is the power of fiction, and why do we as readers keep returning to it? While this question has somewhat fallen out of fashion in the last decades, a revival seems to be under way. For one way to explain the allure of fiction is that it offers the articulation of the imaginary, and these days, in the context of debates about globalization, that concept is gaining currency again as “transnational imaginary.” Yet how are we to understand this reconceptualization? Prof. Rohr’s talk will explore the strategies of staging the “transnational imaginary” in Katie Kitamura’s acclaimed novel Intimacies (2021).

About the speaker: Susanne Rohr holds the Chair of North American Literature and Culture at Universität Hamburg. She has published numerous essays in the fields of literary and cultural theory, semiotics, American pragmatism, epistemology, and on a broad range of topics in American literature of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries.
