Dear Members and Friends of the AmerikaHaus NRW,

The Economy as National Security? How Geoeconomic Competition and Geopolitical Confrontation Shape Economic and Security Policy

Dr. Laura von Daniels, Foundation for Political Science and Politics, Berlin
Thursday, July 11, 2024 | 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. | University of Bonn | Rabinstr. 8 | seminarroom 8

The United States increasingly sees the economy as part of its national security to which China is deemed to pose the greatest threat. Conse-quently, a key priority of US foreign policy is to prevent the rise of China as an economically, technologically and ultimately militarily superior power. Dr. von Daniels argues that regardless of who wins the US elections, EU mem-ber states need to better coordinate their economic and security policies if they want to protect their citizens'  security and prosperity in times of geoeconomic and geopolitical confron-tation between the United States and China.

Dr. Laura von Daniels is a senior research fellow at the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP) and, since December 2019, head of the Americas Research Unit. Previously, she was a visiting assistant professor at the Central European University (CEU), a research associate at the Hertie School, and held research fellowships at Harvard, Princeton, and Columbia University.

This event is part of the Lecture Series "Current Issues in North American and Cultural Studies" of the North American Studies Program.
