One year after Donald Trump's second inauguration, we will take stock of the far-reaching changes his administration has wrought, both within the United States and abroad. Which policy priorities have taken shape, and where has momentum faded? How have American institutions and society been impacted? How has the U.S. approach to the rest of the world changed and what does that spell for the transatlantic relationship? And which developments can be expected in the months leading up to the midterm elections in November?

 

Please note that the speaker we had originally confirmed for this event, Dr. Steven Sokol, has had to cancel his trip to Germany for medical reasons. Instead, we look forward to discussing the Trump Administration's first year with:

 

Dr. Andrew B. Denison is director of Transatlantic Networks, a center for foreign policy consulting and education, based in Königswinter. He serves frequently as a commentator on German radio and television and is a regular talkshow guest, including at Presseclub (ARD), Hart aber fair (WDR), DeutschlandRadio Kultur, Maybrit Illner (ZDF), and Markus Lanz (ZDF). Dr. Denison received his Ph.D. from the Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at the Johns Hopkins University in Washington, D.C.; his M.A. from the University of Hamburg; and his B.A. from the University of Wyoming. From 1980 to 1986, Denison served as an engineer in the Wyoming Army National Guard. He grew up in Laramie, Wyoming.

Prof. Dr. Anke Ortlepp is Professor of North American History at the University of Cologne. She previously taught at LMU Munich and the University of Kassel. She spent almost a decade of her professional career in the United States, as a graduate student (Harvard University), a PhD candidate (University of Wisconsin, Madison) and a Postdoctoral researcher (German Historical Institute Washington, D.C.). Her publications include Jim Crow Terminals: The Desegreation of American Airports (2017).
