Frederick Reiken will read from his novel Day for Night (2010) and newer work. “Day for Night is like swimming in the depths of a dark ocean,” wrote the Australian Brisbane Courier Mail. “Everything moves in a different way down there; just as the rhythms of Reiken’s writing move in a different way. You want to keep exploring but you will need to come up for air soon. A mysterious undercurrent, apparent coincidence, and haunting – at times chilling – accounts are entwined in this complicated tale that spans time and terrain.” For the London Sunday Telegraph, the novel performs “[a] dazzling tour de force […T]here are too few actual miracles to emerge from the horror of the Shoah; this humane, enriching work makes us believe in one.”

About the speaker: Frederick Reiken is an American author of novels, short stories, and essays. His novels include Day for Night (2010), The Lost Legends of New Jersey (2000), and The Odd Sea (1998). Formerly a news reporter and columnist, his diverse background encompasses having worked as a wildlife biologist in the Middle East. A professor of writing and literature at Emerson College, in Boston, Reiken is currently writer-inresidence at the HanseWissenschaftskolleg in Delmenhorst.
