At the heart of the fireside chat is the question of how the law can and should respond when extraordinary catastrophes overwhelm existing legal mechanisms. How can compensation systems be designed when conventional procedures reach their limits? Who decides what a human life is worth, by what criteria and with what legitimacy?

Participants will have the opportunity to discuss these questions with Kenneth R. Feinberg, one of the American lawyers most closely associated with addressing extraordinary mass claims and their legal consequences.

There will be an opportunity for questions from the audience. The event will be moderated by Sebastian Foerste, Rechtsanwalt and Partner at gunnercooke.

For those wishing to explore the subject in advance, the title of the event is taken from Feinberg’s article of the same name in the Case Western Reserve Journal of International Law. His books What Is Life Worth? and Who Gets What: Fair Compensation after Tragedy and Financial Upheaval examine the subject in greater depth. The film Worth, starring Michael Keaton as Kenneth Feinberg, is available on Netflix.
