Communicative Power America: The End and Beginning of American Exceptionalism

Tuesday, January 12, 2021 | 6:00-7:30 pm
Dr. Holger Janusch | North American Studies Program

In a time of rising nationalism and populism, the struggle between great powers for regional and global hegemony is back. The Russian annexation of Crimea, the territorial disputes in the South China Sea, the proxy wars in Syria, and the trade wars promoted by the United States are just a few examples of the return of great-power politics. In the face of these challenges and its own declining power, the US is missing any clear, long-term strategy and moral compass to guide its foreign policy. The development of Europe since World War II proves that altering the very nature of international politics is possible. In his talk, Dr. Janusch proposes a new ideal for US foreign policy based on Habermas’s notion of communicative power.
