Transatlantic Relations after the German Federal Elections. Challenges, Uncertainties, Opportunities?

 with

Jackson Janes, PhD
President, American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS)

moderated by

Sumi Somaskanda
Senior news anchor at DW News (Deutsche Welle)

The basis for an effective foreign policy is not only creative leadership in government. It also requires public support of that policy. The current political clashes over principles and priorities on both sides of the Atlantic are weakening the capability in responding to the challenges facing Germany and the US. The recent German federal elections illustrate the burdens of generating a consensus not only on domestic politics but they represent fissures in foreign policy. While uncertainties are a challenge, they can be a catalyst for seeking new options and opportunities

Dr Jackson Janes is the President of the AICGS at Johns Hopkins University, Washington, DC. He was Director of the European office of The German Marshall Fund of the United States in Bonn (1980–85), and the German-American Institute in Tübingen (1977–79). He chaired the German Speaking Areas in Europe programme at the Foreign Service Institute in Washington DC (1999–2000) and was President of the International Association for the Study of German Politics (2005–10). He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the International Institute for Strategic Studies, and the US Atlantic Council.

Sumi Somaskanda is a reporter, anchor, and editor covering Germany and Europe over the last 10 years. She is a senior news anchor at DW News (Deutsche Welle) and an editor for the Berlin Policy Journal.
